AusPat enhancement - Full text searching is released

1 Dec 2010

Customers can now benefit from the latest AusPat enhancement, Australian patent specification text searching, bringing IP Australia one step closer to providing an electronic 'one stop shop' for all Australian patent information.

Full text searching has been launched in a beta environment and is accessible from the AusPat homepage. Customers can now access Australian patent specifications including abstracts, claims, descriptions and diagrams. All are available in a text searchable PDF format.

The initial release of the text searching capability includes full system functionality and approximately 50% of the specification collection. Extra specifications will be added progressively with the full collection to be made available free of charge by the end of March 2011.

The added functionality will provide customers the ability to conduct a text search of open to public inspection (OPI) Australian patent specifications back to 1904. Previously electronic specifications were only available back to 1998 and these were not text searchable.

Customers are encouraged to:

  • experiment with the new functionality
  • determine their business search strategies.

We expect that the new AusPat functionality will provide added benefits to customers wishing to explore the wealth of information residing in patents.

What's next? The next planned enhancement, eDossier, will provide electronic access to documents such as:

  • requests for examination
  • examination reports
  • responses to examination reports
  • amendments and search results.

EDossier is expected to go live in early 2011. IP Australia will provide status updates for the eDossier release over the next few months.
