Patent Attorneys Have Their Say

On 7 April 2011, IP Australia and the New Zealand Ministry of Economic Development released a discussion paper for a trans-Tasman patent attorney regulatory framework.

The discussion paper can be viewed here and proposes to establish:

  • a single governance body for patent attorneys,
  • consistent qualification requirements for registration as a patent attorney,
  • a single register of patent attorneys, and
  • a single disciplinary regime.

Public information sessions were held in Melbourne and Sydney, along with a webinar which can be viewed on IP Australia's YouTube channel.

The deadline for public comment passed on 16 May and eighteen submissions were received in total (PDF files):
