Government response to patent reports

Providing patent protection for innovators and researchers whilst ensuring reasonable access to the new technologies and medical treatments they develop are the key objectives of the Government's response to three important reports into Australia's patent system and gene patents.
Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr acknowledged concerns in the community about gene patents and said the Gillard Labor Government carefully considered reports from a Senate Committee, the Advisory Council on Intellectual Property and the Australian Law Reform Commission in preparing its response.
"The response is designed to give confidence to the significant investments in biotechnology innovation, research and development and ensure that Australians will not be denied reasonable access to affordable treatments and essential diagnostic tests through inappropriate use of the Patents Act," Senator Carr said
