Gene Patents Response


Providing patent protection for innovators and researchers whilst ensuring reasonable access to the new technologies and medical treatments they develop are the key objectives of the Government's response to three important reports into Australia's patent system and gene patents.

Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr acknowledged concerns in the community about gene patents and said the Gillard Labor Government carefully considered reports from a Senate Community Affairs Committee inquiry into gene patents, the Advisory Council on Intellectual Property review of patentable subject matter and the Australian Law Reform Commission report in preparing its response.
