Organisational structure
We comprise of six business groups:
- Business Development and Strategy Group
- Business and Information Management Solutions Group
- Customer Operations Group
- Corporate Services Group
- Patent and Plant Breeder's Rights Group
- Trade Marks and Designs Group
The Director General
The Director General of IP Australia is a designated chief executive officer under the Financial Management and Accountability legislation, and is directly responsible to the Minister for Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education for the effective, efficient and ethical use of the agency's resources. The director general has agency head powers under the Public Service Act, delegated from the secretary of the department.

Business Development and Strategy Group
The Business Development and Strategy Group is responsible for:
- managing our awareness and education initiatives
- developing strategic directions and policy on IP
- developing strategies for the growth of our business
- monitoring the organisation's performance
- setting and managing the strategic direction of our relationships with customers, stakeholders, international agencies and other IP offices
- managing our legislative and parliamentary responsibilities
Business and Information Management Solutions Group
The Business and Information Management Solutions Group is responsible for delivering and managing information and technology that enables our business to function efficiently.
Customer Operations Group
The Customer Operations Group is responsible for:
- administering patents, trade marks, designs and plant breeder's rights effectively and efficiently
- providing customer service, including managing the Customer Service Centre
- maintaining the Register of Patents, the Register of Designs, the Register of Plant Breeder's Rights and the Register of Trade Marks
- providing information to customers
Corporate Services Group
The Corporate Services Group is responsible for delivering a broad range of services to the staff and supports the effective and efficient operations of the organisation. The core services are human resource management, financial management, and property and security management.
Patent and Plant Breeder's Rights Group
The Patent and Plant Breeder's Rights Group is responsible for granting patents and plant breeder's rights, including:
- examining patent applications and granting patents
- examining plant breeder's rights applications and registering plant breeder's rights
- conducting hearings and issuing decisions on disputes relating to registration, refusal and licensing of these rights
Trade Marks and Designs Group
The Trade Marks and Designs Group is responsible for:
- granting trade mark and designs rights
- examining trade mark and design applications
- registering trade marks and designs
- conducting hearings and issuing decisions on disputes relating to the registration or refusal of trade marks and designs rights
- providing information and technical support to COG
- assisting BDSG by providing input into policy and legislative development
- providing advice to government
