Opportunities in Patent Examination 
The selection process
Your application will initially be assessed against the required capabilities needed to perform the duties of an Examiner of Patents.
We are seeking applicants who possess the following capabilities:
- knowledge and experience in a relevant technology area;
- clear, concise and logical written and verbal communication skills;
- highly developed research and analytical skills and the ability to apply or rapidly learn to apply legal principles in the context of making timely decisions and writing persuasive arguments; and
- sound interpersonal skills including the ability to:
- liaise with others, work co-operatively and contribute effectively in a team to achieve work plans and goals; and
- accept and apply constructive feedback in both training and on-the-job environments in the performance of your duties.

Stage 1 - Application
Stage 1 is a written application which must include all the following information:
- details of your qualification(s);
- your academic results, including a transcript or list of subjects studied and your results;
- an abstract of your thesis (if undertaken);
- a detailed resume of your employment, research and study history, explaining any gaps;
- contact details including alternate contact;
- details of your citizenship status; and
- a response to the questions asked in the application form.
Your stage one application will be assessed to determine your suitability to progress to the next stage of the assessment process.
Stage 2 - Interview
Stage 2 is a face-to-face interview which will be held in Canberra. This will be followed by a written test developed to assess your comprehension and written communication skills.
A tour of an Examination Section will be provided for all candidates interviewed.
Referee Reports
These will be obtained verbally after interview as required. The referee will be asked to make comments on your skills and experience as they relate to the position of Examiner of Patents.
