What were you doing before joining IP Australia and how did you hear about us?

Prior to joining IP Australia I was studying at the University of Wollongong completing my Physics degree. I saw the recruitment advertisement in the Canberra Times Job Section and that IP Australia were looking for people with a background in Physics.

Why did you apply to become a Patent Examiner?

Patent examining was a job that would allow me to use the skills that I had acquired through my studies at university. There are not too many jobs within the government that require a physics background. The job security and flexibility of the Australian Public Service was also appealing, as was the chance to view the latest inventions and technologies.

How did you find the selection process and training program?

The selection process was very straight forward and the training very interesting. I was certainly nervous at the interview, as it was my first “real” job interview! We were required to write a mini essay on a given topic (related to your background) which I found quite different. However the panel was very friendly and relaxed and willing to answer questions.

The training program was also quick to introduce us to all areas of patent examination and it wasn’t long before we were all up to speed with the requirements of the job.

What do you like most about your job?

Being able to see several different inventions that are at the cutting edge of technology before it goes out to the public is definitely exciting. The patent examination work is mostly individual which also suits me. I find it a very relaxed, low pressure job, and you don’t often get bored as there are always different inventions to look at!

What do you think is the best thing about working at IP Australia?

Without a doubt, the flexibility and work conditions. There are so many options available (such as home-based work and part time work) that you can choose from to keep a well balanced work/social life. I am fortunate to be able to work part time which has allowed me to pursue other interests in my life. The people here are also fantastic and very understanding and supportive.

What opportunities have you had since joining IP Australia?

There have been several opportunities to attend conferences, personal development courses and various improvement projects. These allow you to gain skills which compliment normal examination work. On top of that, the IP Australia social club and OH & S staff organise many events to ensure the physical and mental health of employees.

What would you highlight to potential applicants considering a career with IP Australia?

If you enjoy a quiet work environment and are looking for a flexible and interesting career then look no further than IP Australia! The people are extremely helpful and friendly and the workplace is supportive of everyone’s individual needs.

How do you like living in Canberra?

I was born and raised in Canberra and it is a great place to live. There’s no hustle and bustle of busy city life like bigger cities such as Sydney, and with the relaxed atmosphere, it is a great place for families. With the ski fields and beaches only 2 hours away, getting away for a weekend is never a problem. Most things in Canberra are no more than a 40min drive away and if you’re into outdoor activities there is a never ending network of cycle paths and running or bushwalking trails! Overall, it is a fun place to be with plenty of entertainment and facilities to suit everyone.
