What were you doing before joining IP Australia and how did you hear about us?

I was working as a sales representative in a call centre that belonged to Foxtel based in Melbourne for about 2 years before I joined IP Australia. I have worked for various call centres in the private sector in Melbourne for about 4 years before I joined the Public Service.

Why did you apply to become a Patent Examiner?

I applied for the position of a patent examiner because I thought that it would be great to do a job where I would be in constant touch with the future of my technology area which is electronics & communication. Today, I am glad that I had made that decision because this job has surpassed my expectations.

How did you find the selection process and training program?

The selection process was very similar to other public sector jobs that I had applied for. The initial process entailed filling out a selection criteria document & writing a cover letter, based on which I was called for the interview. The interview went very well especially because the interview board was very friendly & they put me in a state of complete ease. I hear that the selection process is easier these days as one is not required to write the selection criteria document.

Training at IP Australia was awesome as we were a batch of about 35 trainees from different technological areas & we had a great time in the training centre which was about 6 months. I have made great friends in the training centre.

What do you like most about your job?

The people & the flexibility in the workplace are the two primary reasons. There are many more reasons why I like my job & I’m sure once one starts working in IP Australia, he/she will understand where I am coming from.

I have talked two of my closest friends from Melbourne into joining IP Australia & they love it here.

What do you think is the best thing about working at IP Australia?

The feeling that I am providing an important service to Australians by ensuring that proper patent protection is enforced. I take a lot of pride in the work that I do & I sincerely believe in our purpose of achieving an effective, efficient, consistent & global patent system in order to promote innovation.

What opportunities have you had since joining IP Australia?

IP Australia provides numerous training & developmental opportunities to update the skills of the employees. I have had the opportunity to attend the International Symposium on Communication & Information Technologies in Sydney this year which was a great experience for me. Also, I have been a part of an Assessor Training Course & a Job & Interview Skills Training Course. I have also expressed my interest to be on the Management to Leadership Program which is due to start in February 2008 which mainly focuses on developing skills needed for team leading & middle management positions.

What would you highlight to potential applicants considering a career with IP Australia?

IP Australia is a great place to work. The people here are very supporting, the working hours are very flexible & Canberra is a great city.

How do you like living in Canberra?

No traffic jams, everything is within a 20 minute drive, a very multicultural place, good restaurants, IP Australia is situated here…..what else can one ask for??!!
