IP Lodgement Point offers customers a way to lodge their IP documents in each state through a selected Australia Post retail outlet in the capital city of each state and territory, except the ACT where documents can be lodged directly with IP Australia's head office.
Customers can lodge their IP documents or make payments with Australia Post, and receive a receipt for their lodgement and/or payment while receiving confirmation of the date this lodgement occurred - securing a filing date.
Customers will continue to have access to IP information through the use of the IP Australia website and the IP Australia Customer Service Centre on 1300 65 10 10.

What IP Lodgement Point brings customers
The new service arrangements with Australia Post will deliver a range of benefits including increased accessibility for customers, improved document security and agility in service delivery.
An IP lodgement point is based in the CBD area of each capital city in every state and territory in Australia. Currently, 80% of IP Australia’s primary sub office users are positioned within 3km of these locations*. In addition customers will for the first time have access to IP lodgement services in the Northern Territory through a service location in Darwin.
Documents will now be transported through Australia Post’s secure overnight courier service. This means that documents and fees are secure when they are lodged at the lodgement point, right through to delivery at IP Australia’s head office in Canberra.
Using IP Lodgement Point
Customers wishing to lodge in person will need to complete a Lodgement Cover Sheet to include with the lodgement and lodge it at the designated Australia Post outlet in your state or territory.
Below are some key points to be aware of when lodging:
- An IP Lodgement Cover Sheet must be used with all filings and payments. Cover Sheets are available at IP Lodgement Points or one can be sent out to you by calling IP Australia on 1300 65 10 10. This sheet includes customer personal information and details of the lodgement. This sheet needs to be completed and placed on top of the lodgement. Due to the unique barcode on this sheet, it cannot be photocopied or otherwise replicated.
- All relevant IP forms need to be included with the lodgement. For example if lodging a Trade Mark application, customers will need to complete the IP Lodgement Cover Sheet (available at IP Lodgement Points or by calling IP Australia) as well as the Application to Register a Trade Mark form. Forms are available on the IP Australia website or by calling IP Australia on 1300 65 10 10.
- Australia Post will accept your lodgement “as is”. Customers will continue to be responsible for checking that all filings are complete and correct including that the right forms have been completed, the correct documents have been attached and payments are correct.
- Should customers need to make a payment with the lodgement, customers are again responsible for checking the payment amount made is correct. Payment requirements can be checked on the IP Australia website or by calling IP Australia on 1300 65 10 10.

Background information
IP Australia completed a comprehensive review of its state based service delivery arrangements late last year. The review concluded that IP Australia would continue to provide education and awareness activities through state based staff, however it would be more effective to enter into an outsourcing arrangement for the lodgement of documents and payment of fees relating to IP rights.
IP Australia engaged Australia Post to deliver its new state based lodgement service arrangements. These services include the lodgement of documents and payment of fees relating to registered IP rights and new applications for Patents, Trade Marks and Designs.
