The Register of Olympic Designs
The Olympic Insignia Protection Act (1987) provides for the protection of Olympic symbols and expressions, such as the famous Olympic rings symbol and the Olympic motto ‘faster, higher, stronger’. The Act contains provisions for a Register of Olympic Designs. This Register is maintained by the Registrar of Designs and may contain a maximum of ten currently registered designs at any one time.
Only the Australian Olympic Committee may register designs featuring protected Olympic expressions and artistic works. This includes the Olympic rings and the torch and flames symbol. Registration gives the Australian Olympic Committee a monopoly right the in the registered design. No person may apply the registered design, or one so similar as to be taken for it, to any article without licence from the Australian Olympic Committee.
The Register of Olympic Designs is held in the Canberra office of IP Australia, where it is available for public inspection on request. However, extracts from the Register showing details of registered Olympic designs can be found here.
More about protected Olympic expressions and symbols can be found in the Draft Designs Manual of Practice and Procedure or in the Olympic Insignia Protection Act (1987) .
