Register of Olympic Designs
What it protects
The Register of Olympic Designs may contain a maximum of 10 currently registered designs at any one time.
Only the Australian Olympic Committee may register designs featuring protected Olympic expressions and artistic works. This includes the Olympic rings and the torch and flames symbol. The committee has a monopoly right in the designs on the Register of Olympic Designs.
A registered Olympic design - or a design so similar as to be mistaken for it - can be used only under licence from the Australian Olympic Committee.
The legislation
The Olympic Insignia Protection Act 1987 provides for the protection of Olympic symbols and expressions, such as the famous Olympic rings symbol and the Olympic motto, 'faster, higher, stronger'. The Register of Olympic Designs is part of this broader IP protection.
