Spun Concrete Pipe
Hume Australian Patent 4843/26 lodged 22 November 1926
Hume's Australian developed Humespun concrete pipes are used around the world.
The spun concrete pipe is made by a process in which centrifugal force is
used to spread a wet concrete mixture over the inner surface of a horizontal
mould. Concrete is fed into the slowly revolving mould which is spun, squeezing
out surplus water and evenly spreading compacted concrete over the inner surface.
The pipes are extremely dense and able to withstand great pressure and non-porous
because the water is expelled. The process, originally patented in 1910, spread
rapidly and was licensed for use throughout the world by the 1920s.
