Japan IP Information and Resources

This information has been developed by IP Australia to assist Australian traders and members of the public who wish to learn more about the intellectual property (IP) system in Japan.

Before trading overseas, businesses should undertake an IP audit to accurately assess what needs to be protected. In particular, it is crucial to conduct due diligence and develop a comprehensive IP strategy before entering the Japanese market. It may be necessary to look at different options for protecting IP compared to what may be appropriate in Australia.

Remember:

  • Do your homework – research into local operations is crucial;
  • Make sure you get basic protection for your IP by registering it in Japan – Australian IP firms with Japan expertise can help you;
  • Develop strategies to protect your IP that are tailored to your situation and the unique challenges provided by the Japanese IP environment.

In early 2008 we will be including further information and various fact sheets to help you to think about an IP strategy for Japan. These fact sheets will cover protection of patents, trade marks, industrial designs, plant breeder’s rights, copyright as well as enforcement and IP challenges in Japan.

However, in the interim, please visit the contacts and further information page of this site for a list of law firms that may be of assistance. In addition you will also find contact details of relevant organisations.
