SNIPER IP bibliography

SNIPER is a bibliographic database of journal articles, conference papers, and other documents about issues in intellectual property. It provides a knowledge base to support policy, awareness and research in intellectual property matters.

SNIPER is published by the Library at IP Australia. SNIPER is an acronym for Searchable Networked Intellectual Property Electronic Resource. As at June 2005, the SNIPER database contained over 6,000 records, with 100-150 new items added each month.

Informit Online is an internet gateway providing access to over 80 Australasian research bibliographic databases. More information about SNIPER

Why create the SNIPER database?

There is a substantial body of literature covering patent, design and trade mark registrations, as well as the science/technology which underlies these registrations. Both these areas are well served by available sources. However, intellectual property policy, trends and developments are not well covered in current commercial databases, or databases produced by other intellectual property organisations.

What information does SNIPER contain?

SNIPER provides information relating to IP Australia's core business areas, namely patents, trade marks and designs. SNIPER also includes other topics that impact on IP Australia's business, especially related intellectual property matters such as copyright, plant breeder's rights and domain names. These related matters are included if they relate to significant Australian or international trends and developments, or if they are significant to the field of intellectual property as a whole.

Where does SNIPER content come from?

Content is gathered from journals in IP Australia Library's collections, with further reference to other journals, conference papers, book chapters and electronic documents, as appropriate.

How are subject headings and names controlled in the SNIPER database?

Topical subject headings are allocated from the Intellectual Property Subject Thesaurus. Name headings are allocated from the document Intellectual Property Names for Use as Subject Headings. Both these documents are maintained by the Library at IP Australia and are subject to occasional revision.

How big is the SNIPER database?

As at October 2004, the SNIPER database contained over 5,000 articles. Approximately 100-150 new records are added to SNIPER each month.

What SNIPER products can I obtain?

Internet users can view the monthly SNIPER bulletins. They may also subscribe to monthly email reminder service which provides a link to the each new bulletin when it is published.

SNIPER is also available as a searchable database on the internet through the Informit Online database host service. For information on subscription to SNIPER on Informit, please visit the Informit website at http://www.informit.com.au/

How can I obtain copies of items from SNIPER?

For Copyright and other reasons, the Library at IP Australia cannot provide copies of SNIPER items to users outside of IP Australia. Please contact your local library to obtain copies of articles and other documents listed in SNIPER.
