FOR IP PROFESSIONALS

Dream Sheild

The Dream Shield project features intellectual property (IP) success stories and tips for Aboriginal inventors, designers and business owners.

The Dream Shield project shows real examples of how to protect and grow your IP. It's not rocket science, just a few key concepts and tips on where to get help.

For example, Aboriginal Elder John Watson lost his finger hunting crocodiles with his bare hands and used a traditional medicine to numb the pain. His community initiated a research partnership with Griffith University, successfully securing a patent and a host of commercial opportunities.

LawHelp is a service started by the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations and volunteer Lawyers. It gives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006(CATSI Act) access to legal help. Legal help through LawHelp is available to not-for-profit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations. It is not available to individuals.

Through LawHelp, Indigenous corporations can amongst other things get help with intellectual property arrangements - such as copyright and moral rights protection and infringement, registration and maintenance of trade marks, business names and domain names and the commercialisation of a corporation's intellectual property rights. Further information can be found on the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations website.
