About the team

Australia’s Chief Scientist is an advocate and champion for Australian science internationally and domestically, and provides high-level independent advice to the Prime Minister, the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology and other Ministers on matters relating to science, technology, innovation and education. The Chief Scientist also engages with the general public, to promote understanding of science and its contribution to our economy and society.

The Office of the Chief Scientist communications team is a dynamic four-person team that supports the Chief Scientist’s external and internal communications activities, including speeches and events, media engagement, communications campaigns, and website and social media channels. As the Senior Writer, you would be working with the Head of Communications and two Senior Communications Officers, as well as the Chief Scientist.

What you will do

Working as the Senior Writer in the Office of the Chief Scientist is a truly unique opportunity to develop engaging and exciting content on wide-ranging topics.

As the Senior Writer in the Office of the Chief Scientist, activities can include:

  • drafting, researching and developing keynote speeches in collaboration with the Communications Team and under the guidance of the Chief Scientist
  • developing communications products including media releases, media summaries and PowerPoint presentations
  • assisting in the preparation, design and editing of publications, including the use of Adobe InDesign (training can be offered if required)
  • keeping a watching brief on issues relevant to the work of the Office of the Chief Scientist.

Tasks will often be undertaken in tight timeframes, with competing deadlines and high expectations of the quality of finished products.


To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


This position is expected to commence in early August 2019 for a nine month period and is located in Canberra.

Salary for this role is at APS 6 level, however it is subject to negotiation based on previous experience and circumstances.

This Recruitment process is being used to fill a current non-ongoing APS Level 6 vacancy. A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing APS Level 6 vacancies should they become available within 12 months from the date advertised.
