My name is Lana Halperin and I am part of the team that developed and launched Australian Trade Mark Search. The team is led by Robert Wills.

Australian Trade Mark Search is the new trade mark search system we have developed for the public. It replaces ATMOSS, the system that had been in use since the mid-1990s.

The journey

In developing the system our goal was to put user needs at the core, taking into account the very diverse needs of those within the IP industry and those exploring trade marks for the first time. We focused on keeping the best features of ATMOSS while delivering additional search capability and a modern interface.

We went through many rounds of consultation directly with users, meeting face-to-face, growing a mailing list of over 200 subscribers and providing access to prototypes and early versions of the system for feedback.

Familiarisation sessions

In December 2016 we made a testing version of the system available to the public for further feedback. While in this testing phase, we ran familiarisation sessions for trade mark attorneys and search professionals - those who rely on the system for their day-to-day work.

Over 400 people attended the 18 sessions in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra, which was a fantastic turnout.

Hailing from Perth originally, I was excited to see that the first Perth session booked out so quickly. We were able to run a second session which was also very well attended. We were also very glad to see such a strong turnout in Hobart – the venue was almost at capacity!

The familiarisation sessions were a valuable opportunity to meet and chat with many searchers, paralegals, attorneys and partners and hear about their varied experiences and perspectives. There was so much knowledge and experience in every room. Several of the comments and suggestions from the sessions have already directly led to new and improved features in the system.

The system was formally launched on Friday 10 February 2017 at Pause Fest 2017, an event for creative, tech and business to immerse in new ideas and fresh tech. You can watch the video of the Hon Craig Laundy MP, Assistant Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, and TrademarkVision (our Queensland-based development partner) CEO Sandra Mau launching the system. In the video Sandra describes how TrademarkVision came to life, working with IP Australia and how wanting to solve a problem lead to developing world class technology.

Feedback on the system since the launch has been positive and we’re excited to continue working with users to develop the system over time.
