Issue summary: 

IP Australia publishes a range of personal information of applicants and owners in accordance with IP legislation and the Australian Privacy Principles. However, the availability of such information means that this information can be misused by third parties, contrary to the intention of making the information available.

IP Australia will consider a range of measures to address customer concerns around the misuse by third parties of the published personal information.

Comments: 

High priority due to public interest in ensuring personal information of IP Australia’s customers is used for intended purposes.

In the first instance we initiated non-legislative actions to address this issue. In addition to customer education and awareness activities, changes were made to IP Australia’s search systems, databases and internal processes.

IP Australia will continue to monitor this issue and consider further actions as required.
