This interactive visualisation, prepared for the Australian National University’s Research School of Population Health, explores the use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in the diagnosis of complex disease. Here we use the research field of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) to showcase the capabilities of interactive visualisation to derive insights from patent data. This analysis demonstrates a pattern of peaks and troughs of commercial interest over time in this area. Diagnosing ME/CFS is challenging, but recent biomedical research has identified cellular, biochemical and molecular markers that could be behind ME/CFS symptoms. Technological advancements in artificial intelligence or machine learning can enhance diagnostic predictions based on biomarkers and help manage this debilitating condition.
