When will you be advertising for Patent Examiner positions?
Advertising will occur based on the needs of the Agency. If you wish to receive notification when the next Examiner of Patents campaign is being advertised, register your interest here.
Where will the interviews be conducted?
Interviews will be conducted in Canberra. If you are an interstate applicant, IP Australia will meet the cost of your flight to Canberra.
When will you make an offer to the successful applicants?
IP Australia will make offers to successful applicants shortly after interview.
When will I commence?
Successful applicants will be expected to commence in May 2010.
What is the starting salary?
All new Examiner of Patents will commence on $63,814 with progression within the examiner scale up to o $89,340 dependent on performance.
What are the pay points on the Patent Examiner pay scales?
The current pay points are shown below.

How is salary advancement achieved?
Salary progression is based on satisfactory performance. Generally your salary will advance annually to the next pay point on the pay scale. However, access to some pay points is based on meeting special performance standards.

What career prospects are there for a Patent Examiner?
As a Patent Examiner there is a broad range of career options open to you. IP Australia offers a number of ongoing professional development and training opportunities. These include the opportunity to:
- develop further technical skills development within the examination area;
- develop legal skills in the examination role;
- learn other tasks associated with examination functions such as online searching techniques;
- seek progression to management role as a Senior Examiner when positions become available;
- move to other areas of responsibility within the broader Intellectual Property system; and
- pursue careers outside IP Australia, within the Australian Public Service, with international organisations or with patent attorneys.

Can I apply for the job of Examiner of Patents if I am not an Australian
citizen?
To be eligible for employment you must be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent
resident.
I obtained my qualifications overseas, will it be recognised?
If your degree is obtained overseas it must conform to Australian professional standards and formally recognised.
Do you have age limits for applicants?
No, Examiners of Patents are selected on merit.
