Opportunities in Patent Examination 
What qualities and technologies we are looking for
You will be a graduate or an experienced professional who can make well supported decisions, work independently and can apply your technical knowledge to new and challenging ideas.
The role of a Patent Examiner is complex and requires considerable training. As such new examiners will be engaged in a trainee capacity with all training being delivered by IP Australia. Successful applicants will demonstrate the following qualities and skills:
- an openness to learning in a group setting;
- be receptive to constructive feedback and have the ability to apply this in the performance of your duties as a Patent Examiner both in a training and on the job environment;
- the ability to work in a collaborative, collegiate and co-operative manner in a diverse work group and recognise the strengths, work preferences and different view points of others;
- the ability to meet deadlines and adapt to a changing environment;
- well developed written and verbal communication skills;
- sound research, analytical, comprehension and decision making skills; and
- uphold the Australian Public Service (APS) and IP Australia’s code of conduct, professional behaviours and values in carrying out your day to day responsibilities.
Disciplines
We are particularly interested in people with qualifications and experience in:
Mechanical Engineering
We are seeking engineers in a variety of disciplines including:
- mechanical;
- transport engineering, including automotive or marine;
- agricultural;
- civil;
- manufacturing;
- munitions; or
- mining or petroleum engineering.

Medical Devices
We are seeking engineers or scientists with a background or interest in medical devices such as:
- heart valves;
- blood pumps;
- stents;
- prostheses;
- breathing assistance devices;
- catheters; and
- syringes.

Pure or applied chemistry, industrial chemistry, biotechnology, pharmacology, pharmaceuticals and biochemistry
We are seeking scientists with a strong background in at least one of the following:
- biochemistry and synthetic organic chemistry;
- molecular biology, immunology, cell biology – in particular genome, developmental and stem cell biology;
- biochemical, chemical, nucleic acid, peptide and immunological analysis and assays particularly including instrumental analysis, use of array techniques in analysis, protein/molecular screening, protein/molecular diagnostics or cell assay techniques.

Physics
We are seeking physicists with a strong background in at least one of the following:
- semiconductor devices and processing;
- optical devices and systems;
- micro/nano technology; and
- measurement and sensing.

Chemical Engineering
We are seeking engineers with a strong background in at least one of :
- Hydrocarbons, fuels and lubricants;
- ventilation, refrigeration, heating/cooling, air-conditioning, heat exchange;
- plastics moulding;
- layered products/laminates;
- vacuum cleaners and domestic cleaning; and
- filters and separation.
Additional expertise in the following areas would be useful:
- batteries/fuel cells;
- pollution control/treatment/sequestration; and
- solar panels/solar cells.

Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
We are seeking engineers or scientists with a strong background in at least one of:
- telecommunications, internet protocols, wireless networks, wireless protocols or electronic control systems;
- data processing, computer software, e-commerce or speech recognition;
- information storage and retrieval technologies and computer networks; or
- power engineering and / or electrical components such as switches and connectors.
