About World IP Day

When does World IP Day take place?

World IP Day takes place on 26 April every year. The date was chosen because it was the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organisation entered into force on 1970. The theme of World IP Day in 2009 is Green Innovation.

How did it all begin?

World IP Day was introduced by the World Intellectual Property Organisation in 2001 to raise awareness of the role intellectual property plays in our daily lives, and to celebrate the contribution made by innovators and artists to the development of societies around the globe.

Where does it take place?

World IP Day is celebrated worldwide. Each year it brings together people in over 180 countries to participate in a variety of events and activities. These seek to increase public understanding of what intellectual property really means, and to demonstrate how the intellectual property system fosters not only music, arts and entertainment, but also all the products and technological innovations that help to shape our world.

How is it marked?

WIPO member states and partners develop an extensive range of activities, tailored to a variety of groups. Activities that are organised each year include:

  • A message from the Director General
  • Promotional kits
  • Public information events
  • Public broadcasts, magazine and newspaper articles
  • Competitions
  • Partnerships with science and art institutions to demonstrate the link between exhibitions and IP
