Search the designs databases

IP Australia provides useful services to our clients, such as free access to our databases over the Internet.

Important: Please read our disclaimer regarding use of IP Australia's online services.

What will I find?

The designs databases enable you to access information about Australian designs:

  • all active registrations captured from 1973 to 1985 which were still active in 1985;
  • all applications that have been captured from 1986; and
  • nothing captured prior to June 1972.

There is no physical material held at the Melbourne office of IP Australia. For more information see Collection of Australian Patent Microfiche and Designs Registrations.

The databases consist of bibliographical information - i.e. information equivalent to that published in the Australian Official Journal of Designs.

Until an application is registered and published there is only limited information available. No information exists prior to June 1972.

1. Australian Designs Data Searching

Australian Designs Data Searching (ADDS) allows you to search on applications for design registration and registered designs based on a wide range of data fields, thereby providing significantly better search functionality than the Designs Mainframe Database.

All data published in the Australian Official Journal of Designs, can be searched on ADDS. Representations of registered designs are available on-line from design registration number 90000 to current. The data coverage is of all applications and registrations from 1986 and all registrations captured from 1973 to 1985 that were still active in 1985.

The search functionality in ADDS allows searching on names of applicant/owners and authors, lodgement and registration information and International Design Classification. Searches can be limited to date ranges.

2. Designs Searchable Journal

The Designs searchable journal is an electronic version of the Australian Official Journal of Designs which is published every fortnight. The information contained in the searchable journal is set out in a similar manner as the information appearing in the Australian Official Journal of Designs.

You can search the designs journal online.

3. Designs Mainframe Database

Note: public access to the designs mainframe system Desadmin was discontinued as of 15 September 2004. Current designs data can be accessed on the ADDS system.

When can I use the databases?

Our databases are not available on Wednesday evenings between 8 pm and 12 pm and from Friday 9 pm to Saturday 9 am (Australian EST), when regular development and maintenance is undertaken.
