Furniture Castor Patents

George Shepherd Autralian Patent 136548 lodged 10 September 1947

A larger JPEG version of the image ~ 209KB

International success with a strong easily manoeuvrable, quiet, wobble-free furniture castor.

The Shepherd castor is a domed inclined wheel incorporating an oil trap to keep working parts permanently lubricated, the whole encased in a close fitting dustproof cover. George Shepherd was an oil company engineer who wanted chairs that could be moved with ease, even by someone who was sitting on them. World War II slowed down development and it was not until 1946 that the first castors, 7.5cm models, went on the market. Improvements continued - Shepherd castors now cope with light to heavy loads and are sold worldwide.

The full specification for the patent illustrated has 3 pages and 6 figures.
