Maintaining your patent
Standard patents and patent applications
You must pay an annual fee to maintain your standard patent or patent application.
It is usually due on the anniversary of the filing date of your complete application.
You only pay maintenance fees from the fifth anniversary of the filing date.
The maximum term of a standard patent is 20 years (or 25 years for a standard
patent relating to a pharmaceutical substance).
The annual maintenance fee increases at each anniversary.
You can view all patent fees with the Patents >
Patent fees section of this site.
Innovation patents
An innovation patent is initially granted for 2 years. Annual renewal fees
are then necessary for maintaining your patent from the 2nd anniversary on.
The maximum term of an innovation patent is 8 years.
We do not send out reminders for maintenance fee payments.
You can make arrangements for an annuity firm or patent attorney to keep track
of the anniversary of the filing date of your standard patent application or
innovation patent application and they will forward your payment to us.
