New security protections coming to Online Services

Coming soon — multi-factor authentication and increased credit card protection for our Online Services.

To enhance the security of our customer Online Services accounts, we will be introducing multi-factor authentication (MFA) starting in September 2025 and adding an additional layer of protection on credit card payments from 8 August 2025.

Protecting your valuable intellectual property (IP) data is our top priority and these additional measures ensure information remains safe and secure.

Multi-factor authentication

MFA will require users to verify their identity through their choice of authentication tool when logging in to access their accounts. This change aligns our Online Services portal with the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Essential 8 requirements, reinforcing our commitment to safeguarding intellectual property rights data.

To ensure a smooth transition, we are piloting this change with a group of attorney firms beginning in July. We look forward to working closely with our pilot group as we finalise the customer communications, customer support and sequencing ahead of the broader roll-out in September.

Increased credit card protection

From 8 August 2025 we’re adding an additional layer of protection for credit card transactions. Most users and firms using application program interfaces (APIs) won’t notice any changes. Around 5% — including first time payers — may need to complete an extra authentication step before their payment goes through.

Next steps

Stay tuned for more details on how and when you will need to use MFA to access your accounts. We are committed to protecting your data and making this transition as seamless as possible.
