We've adopted the next-generation ANSERA-based SEARCH tool (AbS), a patent search capability developed by the European Patent Office.
Already used within European IP offices, AbS replaces the legacy EPOQUE search tool, which will be decommissioned at the end of 2025. AbS was implemented by our agency in October 2025.
AbS is used internally by our patent examiners to conduct patent searches. Our examiners will continue to make decisions in line with patents practice and procedures.
While the practical use of AbS differs to EPOQUE, customers will not experience any change to the substance of our search products.
The only change customers should see is in the format of the search information statement (SIS) provided with search reports.
The SIS will continue to include the classification and keywords used, providing transparency and confidence in the scope and extent of the search.
AbS uses smart ranking algorithms to improve search outcomes and operates without the use of artificial intelligence. Its search database coverage remains extensive and aligned with international standards.
From October 2025 to June 2026, all search products will undergo additional quality assurance by experienced AbS users within our agency. This extra check complements our usual quality assurance process under the ISO9001-accredited product quality review system.
The introduction of AbS reinforces our commitment to delivering a high-quality, efficient and customer-centric patent administration system.
