Leading applicants

Domestic

The lead domestic filer in 2024 was Australian Grain Technologies, the largest plant breeding company in Australia. The company has been among the top 5 lead domestic filers for 3 consecutive years with filings concentrated in cereal field crops (Figure 5.5).

Second-ranked among domestic filers was Irish Potato Marketing, the largest exporter of protected potato varieties from the UK. In identifying lead filers, applicant residency is based on how applicants first represent their origin in their applications to IP Australia. While Irish Potato Marketing is part of the larger IPM Potato Group, a company based in Ireland, its applications originally identified an Australian business address.

Ranked third was the Grains Research and Development Corporation, an Australian research corporation, funded by the Australian government, to drive profitability and productivity in Australia’s grains industry.

International

In 2024 the lead international filer was Bohm-Nordkartoffel Agrarproduktion Ohg, a German company that provides farm services, basic research and crop harvesting. In second place was a US producer of berries, Driscolls Inc. Last year’s top filer, a Swiss- based agricultural technology company named Syngenta, dropped to third place.
