While we have completed our year-long review researching to better understand Australia’s design economy, we continue to explore and consult with the community as reforms progress.

This page contains information about key events.

Key events

We partnered with the Design Institute of Australia and the Australian Fashion Council to hold a series of three virtual events as part of Melbourne Design Week 2021:

Designs Forum (December 2019)

On 2 December 2019, we hosted a Designs Forum in collaboration with the University of Sydney.

The full-day Forum created an open, engaging and creative discussion. Attendees were invited from an intersection of law, design and industry who represented a broad range of views and backgrounds.

The Forum aimed to generate solutions to a challenge facing the Australian design system today. The outcomes have fed into the designs reform agenda.

Design Canberra Festival (November 2019)

On 9 November 2020, we presented at Object Subject: 2019 National Design Writing Conference. The event is an international platform for writers to address design as a positive change agent in society, part of the Design Canberra Festival. The conference was a meeting of makers and thinkers, bringing together representatives in the design community from Canberra, Australia-wide and overseas. This presentation was focused on what we had learned conducting interviews earlier in the year with people in different roles in design and design-related businesses.

Qualitative research interviews (June – September 2019)

As part of our exploratory research, we held over 80 interviews around Australia with people from design-related professions and industries. The report ‘Talking design’ takes you through what we heard through these interviews happens as a design goes through the ecosystem.
